one more day to go as days are measured
                    as life is measured

but when i think about it
there are more holes than memories
          more space than i matter

while all the things i wish
to be and would rather not
ebb and change
        spare and easy
        in a beggar's palm

i should have
learned to be more than
        binary and blue lights
        photoreceptors and a
picture taker accepting of a half
                              life as if it might
                              someday be full or
                              fuller
but each empty moment
is every empty moment i ignore
               full and pregnant
               virginal and seductive

i practice
  restraint and sedation
  Halcion days over Dr. Kirkbride's
                     view, rolling
                     lawns below a
                     Victorian facade

outside my window all night long
cars rush by as undreaming as me
             in my sleepless bed

following those ghosts
of the Old National Road
       Washington rolling
       out west as god had
       intended, a brazen
       assumption, a penny
       for thoughts that
       should have died a
       long, long time ago

wayward and strayed lights
dissected by the iron fence
fall across the powerhouse and pathology
                as they wait for morning

i am so well
        rehearsed at being
                    normal

i have forgotten
       how to be
            free

ruts and rituals
         chartable perseverations
ticks and tocks and an ever
         repetitive radio washing
         over me
                    songs i had forgotten
                    with damn good reason
                    balm and salt for all
                    of these wounds that
                    never seemed to heal

nursery rhymes and all of
these little hexes, these
haunts and specters kept
at bay with a crooked Thorazine
but sixpence
the oft used blade
grows quickly dull
      the witches all grin
      faces more frightening
      through the fog

one more day to go promises the man
in the white coat with the disorderly
           smile and gin stained eyes
purple pills in a white paper cup
                            unlike his words
                             easy to swallow

the warped record
spins & sounds
        just fine

but i want
    to fix it like
    i want
    to fix everything
but else
nothing is
        as mutable
        as pliable
        as i think

brittle old acetone breaks beneath my soft fingers
                                   my heart drops

                    you i promise
weep and sob to buy you
                                   another

but they never made them again not 45's
not with your name written in your own
teenage magic marker cursive script

i could say
that was why
         i never fulfilled that promise
another empty excuse you would never
        some hear to begin with
        silences are
        gaps spaces
                 grooves where we abide
                                 between
ours the ending of one thing
is a persistent and the beginning of another
    state a
            muted purgatory
            of vinyl fragments
and broken songs we will never
                                     sing again

the hail maker hums low and steady and constant,
the WWA fuzzes out from the kitchen transistor,
a child cries, the Hamilton Beach whirs out a milkshake,
a lighter flicks three times, a different child cries, the pearl
diver breaks a glass, the grill sizzles, the first child giggles,
the pick-up bell rings, a fork scrapes a plate

- Burn one bloody,
wax and pin a rose
on it, frog sticks in the alley.

bread drawer squeals, cash register dings, cups
and saucers, cups and saucers, pick up bell, bread
drawer squeals, cash register dings, a rubber sole scuffs
across the linoleum, a man coughs, the front door slams

- One radio sandwich,
one mother and child
reunion, and Noah’s
boy on bread.

stacked dishes rattle past, spoons chime plates, sirens
outside, cursing from the kitchen, pick up bell, pick up
bell, a woman laughs, bubble gum bubbles bursting

- Gimme a honeymoon with
Tommy and a black and blue
with a Murphy, whistleberries
in the alley.

carpet shop jingle from the radio, a litany of hiccups,
water glasses tinkling, soda fountain hisses, cash register,
pick up bell, cups and saucers, brakes squealing on the street
outside, high heels on the floor, a booth cushion exhales, a counter
stool swivels, an air compressor sighs, a knife drops to the tile

- Got a blue plate,
make it a crowd.

- I need an Adam and Eve on a
whiskey raft and wreck ‘em, zeppelins
in the fog, a bowl of red, and a plate of
foreign entanglements.

- One well dressed dinner all
hot in the alley, and the gentlemen
will take a chance.

It must be said, truthfully
that despite the beginning or end
Thurston happened to exist longer
than any other human being though
                           mostly
                           while
                           falling
falling for hours and days and years and decades and centuries
and eons and ages and kalpas and a thousand other words in a
thousand other languages he created in the time he was there

sometimes the air through which he fell was dark and other times
bright colors and distorted images stretched by and sometimes it
was all silent as death and others times the landscape roared and
                           whistled past

most times there was chaos and a deep and primal fear and he
pulled his arms tight across his eyes and ears and tried to block
out the noise and lights but they were just as loud and bright
inside his mind as out, those twisted faces and gathering shadows
hidden among the melting colors in every direction, leaving him
                           whimpering and crying and helpless

other times he did find tranquility and hours and space to fill
made up friends to talk with and when he tired of those he made
up their families, then whole neighborhoods and cities, nations
and continents, an entire world populated with puppets acting
out the daydream dramas of his boredom, wars and peaces, joys
and sufferings, gods and demons, and when he ran out of things
to make up or his imagination forced him into a corner, he would
turn his back on that world and create another

there were even times, interminable stretches of time, he would
ponder his predicament, recalling every prior moment of his
endless descent but unable to remember its cause, the fall itself,
and he would wonder if he was in some sort of hell or purgatory
and he feared perhaps he had been forgotten by the power that
had put him there for he was certain that he had spent longer than
forever in this little pocket of the universe that must have
then after a time forgotten to die at the end of time
a most natural and
ordinary thing happened and Thurston woke up to take a piss and the falling was over and it
was just like any other morning, and even though it had been just dream, there and then, just
after rising, too many of the thoughts he had during the infinite plummeting still tarried in
his head, more than any waking mind could contain without fracturing and splintering.

She and James walked through a park that no longer exists one crisp fall morning. October, he thinks it may have been. The grass was green but the sky was a thick woolen muffler though the world was still bright and ablaze, for the autumn trees had clung to the colors of summer’s rising and setting sun and refused to let them go. Those too, like everything else, would be shed in time’s due course but there in the space of the moment he plucked a small piece of it away for himself, a scarlet maple leaf like a stolen little flame, and placed it in her hair as he would a flower and it has remained there, burning in his imagination, ever since.

He kissed her lightly that day in the park shelter house, a grand old iron thing, a Victorian bird cage awash in falling leaves, trailing firework flutters caught up and swirling on moody, shifting gusts. Her hair fell away from her face and her dark eyes were the beginning and end of him, he thought, what with the taste of her skin and the smell of hardwood burning in nearby fireplaces, the elements of a spell coalescing into an enchantment of binding and blood and other such left-handed magicks.

The park is gone and forgotten by most. So too are the deer that had often played there in the meadow, fragile and timid and out of place, along with the birdcage and the maple, the sycamore, the walnut, the oak, the paper birch, and the elm; all of them gone, so far and inevitably gone that it makes no sense to mourn their loss. Just gone. But in his mind there persisted an ember in the flickering remembrance of that crimson leaf and its precise and angular edges, tucked within her raven ringlets. There it lingered, a smoldering bit of hexfire waiting for a drier season to come along, one better suited to bewitchment and nostalgia than the logical parade of dog days stretching out ahead.

Nightingale

the songbird that sang
outside my open window
all last night was gone when morning rolled back
around, leaving only a headful
of fleeting memories
her harmony
her voice
lingering
in my mind all day long and well
into eventide, the first
without her though it seemed
just the same as the rest
despite the moon refusing
to shine

Taffeta and Cordage

our minds, like breath
inflate the text, swelling it
into something full and round
the lines and words and letters
growing farther and farther apart until
the space between them is revealed and the things
that exist there within flourish and
it becomes a balloon untethered
borne aloft by the buoyancy of imagination
with its craft and passengers best suited
to romance and adventure and left
at least a bit wiser for having seen
the landscape below from a novel vantage point

Her Much Rumored Whereabouts

looming like red rider-backs
Hindu shuffled and itchy palms
strange shadows beneath familiar elm trees
a street lamp drawn across the water, a shimmering dream almost as real as what shines above but lacking in its depth and clarity
among us fools on this bridge between two shores and the greedy dogs
lockjawing bones and growling at their own reflections
chained to the moment, bent towards blue shift and victims
of wave collapse
while she dances across the sky
as recognizable as the moon in daylight
to just right songs at just right moments
in empty busy places and occupied empty spaces and the stray
pompous conversations and sincere hellos of strangers in passing
